Busy Bee.

Hello, all!

The picture of Ginger above really has nothing to do with this post, I just like it a lot. School is keeping me rather busy--who knew college could be so time-consuming? I actually have one week coming up that is full of craziness: an essay is due, a group presentation has to be given, and there are three midterms. And one is a math exam...on a Saturday...at 8 am. Safe to say my brain will be mush.

So, since I have all this madness to prepare for, I thought I'd just drop in real quick and post something before I get slammed. I'm not feeling especially creative right now, so I'll just do an "update" like I did back in March and talk about what's going on in my life movie-wise. (See The Apartment nod I did there?)

Let's see...as I told you lovely people before, I have a cinema class and so far it's not too shabby. I finally got to see Metropolis (so cool), and all of our screenings are on the big screen at the IU Cinema. We have to do our first essay over a 5-minute clip from any of the six movies we've watched so far, and I'm leaning towards one of my personal favorites, Now, Voyager. My biggest challenge right now is limiting myself to just 5 minutes. Trimming down my clip has been way too difficult. This class is also the one where I have a group presentation, which I'm kinda dreading. Group work is the worst, mainly because I end up doing all the work. I have to initiate everything, I have to constantly stay on top of everyone and make sure they're doing their job--ugh, it's going to be a nightmare. I'm only a little excited about it because our topic is over The Rocky Horror Picture Show, so now I "have" to re-watch it and take notes and be studious about it. Quel horreur.

I actually just finished, like two days ago, an essay for a media class on Hitchcock's Rope. We had to focus on a clip given to us and write 3-4 pages about it. We were supposed to focus on the technical stuff, like tracking shots and mise-en-scene and all that, but I may have gone a little astray. You can't expect me not to go more in depth than that when it's Hitch, okay? I might post the essay on here sometime, I'm not sure.

What else is happening?

Oh, exciting news--my mom and I got tickets for the Hitchcock festival at the Artcraft! They're showing Psycho, The Lady Vanishes, The 39 Steps, Rebecca, Rear Window, and Rope. Unfortunately, because of my job, I can't take off work for The 39 Steps and my beloved Rebecca, but I'll get to see the others so that's good enough. We're also seeing Gone with the Wind at the Artcraft in November. I know TCM and Fathom just did screenings of it nationally, but going to the Artcraft would be much cheaper. My mom is really excited because she's always wanted to see her all-time favorite on the big screen, but nobody ever wanted to go with her. Well, now that I appreciate the classics better and my sister has decided she shares my mom's love for GWTW, she has people to join her.

This Monday is pretty exciting, too. The IU Cinema is showing Some Like It Hot and I'm totally skipping math class to see it. It also happens to be my birthday, so I think it's justified to miss class for a fantastic film. Usually the Cinema shows the classic stuff on weekends, which sucks because I go home every weekend for work so I always miss movies I would love to see. Luckily the Cinema is doing a series called "Monday Matinees" this semester where they've picked three classics to show on, well, Mondays. I may have to skip math again to see Singin' in the Rain in November...

Top Ten: Fred Astaire's Partners

Every August, TCM dedicates one day to one exclusive star. It's times like these I'm thankful to the television gods for both airing TCM and for creating the DVR; Summer Under the Stars covers a vast array of different films and I can always find at least five that I've been dying to see. This August is a bit different because I'll also be contributing to the SUTS Blogathon that runs alongside the programming, hosted by Kristen at Journeys in Classic Film. I really wanted to cover a bunch of people, but things have been absolutely bonkers for me lately. I have other blogathons I already committed to that I still have to write for, I'm going back to IU shortly, and I had gallbladder surgery recently that kept me away from my blogging (but not my film viewing!). Announcing the 100 Years of Esther Williams Blogathon!

  There have been quite a few centennials to honor this year -- Lana Turner, Donna Reed, Jane Russell, Judy Holliday, Dirk Bogarde -- but there is one I'm especially excited to celebrate: Esther Williams! To commemorate this gorgeous human being's 100th birthday, I'm bringing back my Esther blogathon from last year, which ended up being such a lovely way to honor her legacy. Because Esther's filmography isn't very large, I'll allow any topic to be claimed a maximum of two (2) times.   Well, long time, no see! Life has made it hard to keep up with my blog, but I'm going to try my best to stick with my annual blogathons, including my Doris Day one. This year is particularly special because it's going to be Doris's centenary ! Fred Astaire tells Rita Hayworth... You Were Never Lovelier (1942)

In the early 1940s, Fred Astaire was already a legend, thanks to his massively successful teaming with Ginger Rogers. Amazingly enough, although the actor had conquered vaudeville, Broadway, and Hollywood, he still had many more iconic achievements to look forward to. Rita Hayworth, on the other hand, was just beginning her rise to film stardom when she was first paired with Astaire for 1941's You'll Never Get Rich . As Fred tells it, "Gene Markey, then a producer at Columbia Pictures, asked me to discuss an idea about working with a little girl they had under contract there. She was primarily a dancer, he said, and sure to become a terrific star. She had only done a few B pictures up to that time. Her name was Rita Cansino -- recently changed to Hayworth. I had heard about this beautiful daughter of my old vaudeville-days friend Eduardo Cansino." Esther Williams enthralls in... Dangerous When Wet (1953)

It's a bright, beautiful morning at the Higgins' Arkansas dairy farm. Giving us what may be the sunniest opening to a film ever, the Higgins family -- comprised of Pop (William Demarest), Ma (Charlotte Greenwood), cute little pipsqueak Junior (Donna Corcoran), middle daughter Suzie (Barbara Whiting), and the eldest child, Katy (guess who?) -- leaves the house one by one as they sing "I Got Out of Bed on the Right Side" and march to their swimming hole for their daily exercise routine. When it comes time to jump in the water, though, Katy only dips her toe in and turns her attention to the book she brought, which is such a fun bait-and-switch. Esther Williams is going to read about farming instead of swim?! Finally, Pop tells Katy to do her laps before breakfast. She begrudgingly obliges, and in she goes, baseball cap and all, doing a simple but wonderful underwater swim -- until she suddenly hears some advertisement jingle that breaks her out of her peaceful rou

Bob, Bing, and Dottie take the... Road to Rio (1947)

  With the exception of 1962's Road to Hong Kong , the "Road" movies starring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour are some of the funniest, weirdest comedies that ever came out of classic Hollywood. Brimming with inside jokes, delightful musical numbers, and plenty of decadent costumes and sets, the series always features Hope and Crosby as a pair of pals who find themselves in the worst situations as they travel to such places as Morocco, Bali, and Zanzibar. To be honest, not all of the films have aged well thanks to racist jokes and occasionally sexist attitudes, but one of the best entries, as I discovered this year, is Road to Rio . From the moment the opening credits started, this movie had me hook, line, and sinker. (I'm an absolute sucker for animated credits.) The plot follows musicians Hope and Crosby as they're forced to flee every gig because of one woman or another, finally winding up on a ship bound for Rio after they accidentally burn down the

Fred and Ginger's Cinematic Farewell: The Barkleys of Broadway (1949)

  When Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced "The Missouri Waltz" on the set of The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle in 1939, it felt like a historic moment. After six years and nine films, the partnership of Astaire and Rogers seemed to be ending with this final, impossibly beautiful waltz. People from RKO and nearby studios Columbia and Paramount gathered on the set, eager and sad to see this magical pair dance their last steps together. However, as Fred wrote in his autobiography, "Ginger and I never felt that it was any last-time thing. We expected to do another picture or so when the right time came along." Ten years later, that time came when Judy Garland was placed on suspension and forced to drop out of The Barkleys of Broadway . Ann Sothern and Robert Young can't stop marrying each other in... Lady Be Good (1941)

For years now, one of my favorite underrated films has been Lady Be Good , a remarkably fun musical starring * takes a deep breath * Ann Sothern, Eleanor Powell, Robert Young, Red Skelton, Virginia O'Brien, Lionel Barrymore, John Carroll, Tom Conway, and one of classic film's cutest dogs, a beagle-fox terrier mix named Buttons. Despite this stellar cast, Lady Be Good isn't nearly as well known as it should be, which is something that this review will hopefully fix. Nothing makes me happier than a frothy MGM musical, and this film is exactly the kind of tonic I need when I'm looking for a pick-me-up. We open on a courthouse where a divorce trial is underway. On the stand is Dixie Donegan (Sothern), a lyricist whose soon-to-be ex is also her songwriting partner. She tells Judge Murdock (Barrymore) how she and Eddie Crane (Young) met while she was waiting tables and he was very much the struggling artist.
